Normally, in my opinion, commentaries aren’t something you’d consider a relaxing, fun book to read. They’re more meant for digging in deep to a book and taking you through details and proofs of the author and book. “Paradise to Prison” markets itself as a “commentary, textbook and complete study guide to the Book of Genesis” (Back Cover). I would market it as one of the best books I’ve ever read, not overly technical, and I know you would think the same thing.

John J. Davis starts out chapter one with a bit of background and authorship validation, but the book quickly evolves into an enjoyable, educational (and fun) read about Genesis. You’ll find yourself immersed in the culture that Adam & Even, Noah, and the Patriarchs were living in. It will open your mind to the true setting of the lands they lived and walked in. It will also explain to you all the world views vs what the Bible is actually telling you.

Each chapter is labelled with with the chapter and verses in Genesis that Davis is writing about. You’ll find lots of mention of other verses throughout the book as well, helping you to understand not only Genesis, but how it connects to various other parts of the Bible. It is well organized and the chapters do a great job of separating each part of Genesis, giving you an easy guide to the book.

I went through a 52 week study on Genesis with a Sunday school class in recent years. Comparing that study to this is no comparison. I learned more about the history and culture and was able to understand why things were happening that I felt were completely nuts, such as why everyone lied about their wives and took handmaids to have babies with.

I highly recommend this book no matter who you are. If you’re just looking to learn more about Genesis, this is a great and fun read. If you’re thinking about teaching a class on Genesis, this will equip you. There’s something for everyone in the pages of “Paradise to Prison”. Grab your copy today.
