Aimed at equipping Christians to obey Jesus's command to make disciples, this book by a widely respected pastor walks through the who, what, where, why, and how of discipling in the context of the local church. Part of the 9Marks: Building Healthy Churches series.

This is about as short, sweet, and to the point as you can get on any topic. “Discipling” by Mark Dever takes you through a thorough study of the top of discipleship. As part of the 9Marks series, you can use this as a guide to take that first step towards helping your church grow strong. Mark’s 3 part approach gave me a road map to understanding the topic and understanding my part, as well as the role of Pastors and Elders.

I absolutely love it when books break up their books into pieces, parts, section, etc. This book has 3 parts:

Part 1: What is Discipling?

What a great way to start the book. Introducing, defining, and explaining the topic of discipleship. You’ll quickly understand what your role will be, and what your role might not be.

Part 2: Where Should We Disciple?

This talks about the who and where to find a disciple, explaining different people in your life, and who should come first. You’ll get in-depth reasoning on why you should work on your family first before branching out. You’ll understand the role of your Pastor and other members of the church. This part will get you excited.

Part 3: How Should We Disciple?

My biggest struggle is “Who on earth do I approach?” or “How do I find someone?”. I have all these scenarios in my head on why I can’t pick someone, or why I shouldn’t bother asking others. Sure, in some cases, I might find out that’s true. But at the very least the effort would be there. Mark talks about choosing someone, having a clear path, paying the cost, and finally raising up future leaders.

This book will grab you and engage you all the way through the end. I found it an easy, enjoyable read, and you will too.

If you want to take a dive into discipleship, this is the book for you. Packed with educational information, a road map, and a guide to approach, you’ll find this book a valuable training manual to finding your and raising your disciple.
